I wasn’t expecting the new Queens Of The Stone Age until the second week in June, but I received my pre-order already in the last week of May!! The artwork was the second pleasant surprise about this record. Wow, it’s amazing down to the very labels on the disks with the superhero struck by a thunderbolt ..

There are a couple of versions of this release. This is the “deluxe” version; two 180 grams 45rpm records, heavy cardboard sleeve, an extra booklet, even a canvas tote bag, and thanks to the download coupon I won’t have to go without this album when I don’t have a record player at hand.

I wasn’t expecting much. Bands that get big always get funky in a bad way sooner or later, and with all the changes in QOTSA recently I feared for that. But playing this was the third pleasant surprise. The songs and the lyrics are all so good!! The album opens with “Keep Your Eyes Peeled”, the little atmospheric intro builds tension, and then you’ll hear the most awesomely dirt-grovelling guitar sound kicking in, it fits Josh’ clean vocals perfectly. It’s my favorite song of the album hands down, but I like all of the songs.

This is the first QOTSA album that has no dislikes for me. The song “Like Clockwork” even made me cry, which makes this the second release this year that did that, though I’m not sure if that tells something about the music or about me ;)
